Hello. Welcome to Daily(ish) for July June. Actually, June. Check that update from the newsroom. It's actually June still.
Speaker 1:June 27. It's 24 degrees outside. Feels like 24 degrees outside, but this is not a weather podcast. But thank you to the Patreon supporters at Patreon, patreon.com/ichris for supporting me on there. And also thanks to the folks who, pledge their Patreon no.
Speaker 1:Pledge their Amazon Prime accounts through our Twitch channel. You can if you're an Amazon Prime subscriber, you can actually go to goodstuff.fm/twitch, connect your Twitch account to your Prime account, and then you give us gift us a sub. It doesn't cost you any money. I think I've talked about it before on the show. I'll put the link to the YouTube video on how to do it in the show notes, but some sort of thing that Amazon does to help out folks who use Twitch, I guess.
Speaker 1:So this episode is kinda just gonna be a a an un unthought out rant or discussion starter maybe, but, which unlike all of the other episodes that are very well prepared for. Something that's, after watching, we took the kids my wife and I took the kids to, The Incredibles two the other day, and I no spoilers here, unless you are, like, completely, I guess let me rephrase that. There probably will be spoilers because I, the topic I wanna just discuss in brief, I could probably have a lot more examples if I was really thinking about it a lot, but, just wanted to sort of get the idea out of my head. A lot of kids movies, and this happens in TV shows for adult adults and movies and stuff for TV for adults. But in kids shows, what happens a lot, it seems to be happening a lot, and maybe it's been happening for quite a while, but, watching movies through your kid with your kids through their eyes, you kinda see it a little more.
Speaker 1:It's like often the, the premise of the movie is there's a good person who's helping the hero along, and at some point, they reveal themselves to be a bad person, and that's who the hero has to ultimately defeat. And it kind of sets up this view of the world for your kids subliminally that even good people probably shouldn't be trusted. They'll likely turn on you, and so be wary of anybody trusting anybody in the world. And maybe this is a discussion for, something like way too seriously. Good stuff .fm/wts.
Speaker 1:You can subscribe to a podcast where they take kids movies and talk about them way too seriously. And don't get me wrong, I love a nuanced story. I've been watching, Sue and I have been watching Westworld, which has all sorts of, like, can you trust them? Can you not? Who's the good person here?
Speaker 1:Who's the bad person? Should people be allowed to just massacre robots? Do robots have a soul? Those kind of, like, serious questions that obviously are a little more in-depth than what you want your eight year old maybe to be wrestling with after watching a movie. But at the same time, like, even one of our one of our kids sort of noticed with The Incredibles, it was like Incredibles two was that it was kinda predictable.
Speaker 1:Like, one of those one of the people, spoilers again, is gonna turn on them, and and it's almost like but there there's no hint in the movie beforehand until the moment that she turns. There's no hint that she's a bad person. Like, there's no behind the scenes you see them actually going off and doing something. So in early in the movie, so that lets you know what's gonna happen. It's just kinda reveal at the end.
Speaker 1:And that's actually kinda like hamfisted, I feel like, in Incredibles two if I can do a quick mini review. It feels a bit like it's the the premise for why she turns bad isn't really explained that well. There's it's a very quick exposition statements kind of thing of of why, but doesn't really go into any there's no real depth to that betrayal and to why she's the bad person as well. Whereas the the very start of the movie starts off with again, heavy on the spoilers, if you haven't seen the movie, you've been warned. But starts off with the underminer who's like a bad guy who digs very his name much like everything else in Incredibles.
Speaker 1:His name says what he what kind of bad guy he is. He's under goes underneath, mines underneath, and digs up into banks, steals money, and then goes back into the mines. And he's like disappears. His like, sort of his, escape kinda sets up the, you know, a struggle that the heroes have of what good are they doing in the world if they're allowing bad guys to escape. And so we're you're just kinda left to assume that whatever.
Speaker 1:He went off to his mine somewhere to enjoy his wealth and is never seen him from again, even though that was kinda like the whole premise was they let this guy get away. So shouldn't we all be, like, worried about where the underminer is and what's he doing now and where is he mining and what's he under? But you're kinda left just to, like, forget about that because over here we've got this new villain that they're attacking and dealing with. So I don't know. I'm not really arguing for, like, return to, like, if the if the person is wearing a black hat, they're a bad person, white hat's a good person, obviously.
Speaker 1:That's has all sorts of other issues associated with it. But, and and nor am I wanting, like, very simplistic view of, like, introduce the hero, introduce the villain, set them up for obvious, you know, fight at the end where everybody knows the hero's gonna win because you can't have the bad bad guys win. That would be a sad movie for kids. There's I think there's an allowance for and there should be allowance for some nuance in the storytelling, especially when it comes to kids movies. And this is very much like a kids movie, but also very fun for adults too.
Speaker 1:There's a whole family dynamic and baby and tons of great comedic bits in this movie that make it worth seeing even if you, if like me, you're kind of like less than excited about sort of the premise of why the bad person is bad. Whereas you take another movie that actually was I think my one of my favorite movies of the past year is Thor Ragnarok, which I've seen a couple times. And having the bad guy, bad girl in this case, revealed towards the beginning of the movie base doesn't really ruin the the rest of the movie. There's, it's still a superhero movie. It's, there's elements there that could be fun for kids if they're okay with a few swears and or, I guess, I don't know, drunkenness as a comedic element.
Speaker 1:I have to watch it again maybe to see how I view it through my eight year old or 11 year old's eyes. But it it definitely doesn't take away from the movie for me, allowing the bad person just to be evil and bad and, sets up that kind of and maybe that's a refreshing return to that style of, like, maybe this is the end of that cycle for, at least just for me personally, of preferences in movies where, you know, it's kind of like duplicitous and you don't really know who's good and who's bad, and where this is more like spelling it out kinda like, even like in TV, The Handmaid's Tale is another show that Sue and I watch. And it's very obvious who's good, who's bad. There's a few folks who are in the gray area, but there's very obviously, like, a good side and a bad side and who's on which side, but still telling a a really intense story. Alright.
Speaker 1:So now I've mixed Handmaid's Tale, Thor Ragnarok, and The Incredibles two as somehow comparing all three of those. I guess Westworld as well in there, comparing all all of those as if to prove one singular point. So thank you for listening, and maybe you can tweet at me and tell me what my point was or what I should think more deeply about or which episode of Way Too Seriously I should be listening to, episodes I should be listening to. And, and if you want a more thought out version of this discussion for in a future episode, or if I should just go back to complaining about, coffee. Our our grinder broke some coffee list right now, or World Cup, which has been exciting, or podcasting topics.
Speaker 1:We, speaking of talk podcasting topics, Kyle and I have sort of half resurrected, Show Me Your Mic podcast about podcasting. So goodstuff.fm/smym. So you can listen to last there's a couple episodes in that feed. And we are also trying to record every Friday morning, around 08:00 my time in CST, which I think is 07:00 over on the West Coast. And so you we record that on the Twitch channel on our Good Stuff Twitch channel, goodstuff.fm/twitch, and it'll take you there.
Speaker 1:And you can be subscribed and be notified when we go live or, of course, listen to it later. I've been trying to challenge myself to someday do, like, a recording of Daily(ish) live on our Twitch channel just for fun, but it I get nervous about doing anything like that because folks who don't know, who aren't watching me while while I record Daily(ish) which is all of you because I do it alone in an office, Don't realize how often I actually pause, stop, collect my thoughts, take a breath, and, continue on, and then edit things out after the fact. And so it feels a bit like showing how a sausage is made and seeing all the blood and guts on the table or something. That's a terrible analogy. Hope you enjoy this podcast.
Speaker 1:Visit patreon.com/ichris for more info on how you can support the podcasting I and others do at goodstuff.fm, and thanks for listening. Hope you have a great day. Bye.
