Hello. Welcome to episode number 253 of Daily ish. I am joined once again by my wife, Sue, and, she's along for this YouTube journey that we're doing in Montreal. And just wanted to talk a bit about what we're going to be experiencing and innocencing because that's the tour name, experiencing innocence.
Sue:Thanks for explaining it to me.
Chris:Tonight and tomorrow tonight, we have a concert. They're going to two bands, two YouTube cover bands sort of, that are performing. And so we're the first one up is December. They're called from Scotland, and they're folks who have been on the YouTube podcast that I interviewed. We interviewed on there and, I get to be pretending to be their roadie for a bit tonight and help them out.
Chris:And then after that, Acrobat is performing, which is the name of a YouTube song, but that's their YouTube cover band's name. And, so we'll see how how tonight goes. And that's what we're just going to talk about that. And then also tomorrow night's concert, YouTube concert at the Bell Centre, and sort of collectively our thoughts in advance of that as well as Sue's introduction to the world of YouTube fans or I don't know.
Sue:It's hard for me to have lots to say about things like that because I'm I in all honesty, I'm not a huge YouTube fan. I really like the band. I really enjoy the music. I've gone to lots of concerts with you, and I love them. But then then when I see the extent of the fandom, like, that you are in, I I realize I'm not really a big YouTube fan and so then I don't really know how to engage in that kind of conversation.
Chris:Which to be fair, I don't really like it's there's always it's just like anything else. There's always somebody who's a bigger YouTube fan or there's always somebody who has a bigger house than you.
Sue:Right. So it's just like life. You can always compare.
Chris:Generally, That's where I get away with or I overexert myself in the podcasting world. Let's say about YouTube to justify my participation in the world of YouTube because I can only afford to go to like one concert of a tour if I'm lucky. And so whereas lots of these folks, this is like stop 10 or 15 or whatever of this current tour. They see more they they see the band more often on the current tour than I've ever seen in my life kind of idea. Right.
Chris:Which I go back and forth on being okay with. Like, in in my, normal state, head state, I feel like seeing them once or twice in the tour, that's pretty much enough. Like, don't need to see them more often. Yeah. But there's also part of me that would love to just see a whole bunch of different stops and just to see the band more.
Chris:Yeah. But but yeah, you you bring a balance to the force.
Sue:In not like a
Chris:negative way, but like, yeah.
Sue:Yeah. Yeah. Because part of that is also just in terms of where we live, it is not easy to just drive or jump on a quick flight or whatever to go and see a concert. It's really not. It's a good day or more of traveling, and it's also an expense.
Sue:And so I think just that in itself just changes whether or not you can be that type of fam.
Chris:Yeah. Yeah. And having kids obviously affects it
Sue:because
Chris:getting away isn't easy. And, yeah, so that student isn't a hub
Sue:of much of Of concerts.
Chris:Well, and even the band themselves have stopped. Like years ago, they would go through Calgary or Edmonton or Winnipeg or both. And so like back in the day, Poplar era and Vertigo even I think or the three sixty tour, they could have, they stopped in Winnipeg and Edmonton on their stadiums tour, like when they were in football stadiums and stuff. But for arenas, they don't come across the Prairies at all really. So Vancouver, I don't even know if Vancouver gets a stop on this tour because they did they opened in Vancouver in the Joshua Tree Tour, which was last year.
Chris:But they Is
Sue:that their only Canadian stop for Joshua Tree?
Chris:No. They were in Toronto or Montreal as well. So but again, those are like sort of East West Coast as far as you can go in Canada and then East Coast, not as far as you can go, but it still is a fairly expensive flight to get out and and all that kind stuff.
Sue:Yeah. Those are like opposite ends of the country.
Chris:From where we are. We're sort of in the middle ish geographically anyways.
Sue:Yes.
Chris:So what are your thoughts though is like, you've heard me talk about it over, whatever years, but like about this sort of YouTube fan world and stuff. And as we go to even this like a a concert tonight where someone basically paid to help bring a band from Scotland who's sort of connected with YouTube world to Montreal, which is a whole, you know, thing. But then and a YouTube cover band. Is it like yeah. What are your thoughts on what you're hoping or expecting or thinking you might see or experience?
Sue:Well, tonight, I I I really have absolutely no expectations, actually. I'm excited to just go out to a bar and listen to some good music. I guess that's my expectation. If I hate the music, then that'll suck.
Chris:But you've heard I played,
Sue:like, December. Played it in December and and also, obviously, YouTube cover band. I'm going to like that. So I don't think yeah. I think that's gonna be fine.
Sue:It is a bit, like it's hard for me. I mean, was joking with my mom friends that, you know, this isn't something that we do. We feel like we're out of that kind of world and stage of life and all of that where we used to be cool and be able to just go to a concert at a bar. But so it's a little bit of, like it's just awkwardness in terms of I feel out of place because I feel like I don't fit in that world anymore.
Chris:Right. When in reality is everybody else is in the like the majority of people, even at the YouTube show on Tuesday night will be 30 plus for sure. Probably skewing to like 50 plus really demographically. Yeah. Across the whole spectrum of people who are at the show.
Chris:Yeah. And we'll be on somewhat on the younger side in a sense. Like there'll be lots of young people there. Yeah. But yeah, like that your own perception of yourself is sort of feels like you don't fit in or whatever.
Sue:Yeah. So but yeah. I don't know. I'm looking forward to it. I have a hard time.
Sue:So I think the thing that I'm not looking forward to is you will know lots of people or not. Yeah, like you will know some of the people there and it will be, you know, meeting them. And I get to be like your sidekick wife that just is like, hi. And, you know, and if I don't really find anyone to have a good conversation with, then it becomes that, you know, a frustrating night. Anyone that is a spouse and that has been in that situation, like, you know, the office party or whatever situation where you kind of always feel like you don't really have anything to talk about with these people.
Sue:Yeah. That social aspect of it, I'm not super looking forward to.
Chris:Yeah. Makes me anxious or nervous or whatever.
Sue:And even at the U2 concert, like, it's this fun thing that you and I get, you know, experience that you and I get to share together. But then I also kinda have to share it with these other people that I don't know at all.
Chris:Right.
Sue:And so then that that brings it down a level in my mind.
Chris:Right. Which is you have the opportunity, like you can the positive spin is you get to meet some of these people for the first time
Sue:and maybe Exactly.
Chris:There would be an interesting connection that's made or whatever. Yeah. But but yeah, it's like it's totally the office party analogy is or comparison is a good one because it's, you know, these people are important and interesting in your spouse's world, but you may or may not ever actually see them again. And you already know you too enough to know just like you know that you're not going go work at that office.
Sue:Right.
Chris:But you know, you too enough that you're not going to like want to invest that much time in like the YouTube fan community online or whatever.
Sue:Yeah.
Chris:And so, yeah, I'm sure there's plenty of we should have should be like a podcast probably with like Matt's wife or whatever, like spouses and YouTube fans. Those
Sue:would be the ones I would connect with. Yeah. Like for like for real, like that would be, I would be fun to talk to them and be like, is your experience similar to mine? You know? Yeah.
Sue:Whereas that's where I feel like with the people that you're you know, the friends of you you, I feel I feel out of place because I'm like, yeah, I I love you too, but I'm not I'm not a super fan. I I am really fine just going to one concert. I'm I have no desire to go to more than one. I yeah.
Chris:If they play some obscure song that you've never heard before and all of a sudden half the crowd starts exploding and cheering. Right.
Sue:You'd be like I will look to you and say, what is this song? Yeah. Like yeah. Yeah. So I think, however, I'm probably going into it with the wrong attitude.
Sue:Right? Like, should. It's fun to meet new people and to
Chris:And you're an extrovert by nature.
Sue:I am. But you know what? I'm an extrovert in is Part of this is my personality is I love hanging out with people, but I really, really love hanging out with people that I know well. Yeah. And so to me, going to the concert with you, someone I know really well, someone that I really like hanging out with, and having this experience together is really fun for me.
Sue:And then if we have to introduce people that I don't know that well, and that I don't really know if I'm gonna have good conversations or good experiences with. Or if I have bad experiences with them, I don't get to debrief it later. You know, like that kind of thing. So, that's I yeah. That is where I get anxiety and that kind of not super excited about it feeling.
Chris:Right.
Sue:Where some people that are extroverts love meeting new people and they're like, yay, I'm gonna be around a whole bunch of people. I don't know any of them. I'll just get to know them all and it will be really fun. Yeah. That that's not the kind of extrovert that I am.
Chris:Where like I'm an I tend to be an introvert who's scared of, like anxious about meeting new people, but actually sort of stumbles into because I my, whatever defensive mechanism in those moments is just to like ask the person a lot of questions Mhmm. About their life and their world so that I don't have to talk. Then Right. Just keep that going as long as I can until I run out of things to ask and then go find the mini bar or whatever and get a snack or something. Bar.
Chris:Just We're in an Airbnb. Don't know. Think I just call it a bar. The music's that's why. Anyways, and then as far as the concert itself, just like music and staging and whatever, I've talked to you a little bit about it, you've kind of like avoided watching or listening too much to it.
Chris:Yeah. I don't know whether intentionally or not, but just going into it. Do you have any idea of what you're about to experience or see?
Sue:No. Actually, I was thinking about that, like, on the flight down here is, like, realizing that most of the other concerts, you've always, like, prepped me beforehand as to, like, what the stage is gonna look like and what kind of songs are gonna play and all that. And and I feel like we haven't I don't know. Maybe it's just our stage of life. We haven't been able to slow down enough to have a conversation where
Chris:you I did a little bit of supper last night.
Sue:And then yeah. So Not
Chris:showing you pictures, but just talking about how where in the general admission area, like on the floor, because we're going to stand the whole time, like where we might want to try and be.
Sue:Yes. Yeah. So that was, yeah, like that's I mean, post flight, then you did at least fill me in. But it was interesting to me that we hadn't even really talked about that because usually we have at least had that conversation. And yeah, so I haven't had a lot of expectations.
Sue:I'm, yeah, just looking forward to a good show. Like I hope I always get disappointed when Bono does, like, things that disagree with.
Chris:Like what?
Sue:Well, you know, like, I hate it when he pulls a girl up on stage and dances all seductively. I don't like that. I feel like he has a wife that probably doesn't enjoy watching that and it makes me angry. So
Chris:Even though she must obviously, there's surely some sort of peace with it.
Sue:Obviously. And that is what I was going to say. She like, they're still together. She's obviously reconciled that that's part of the act and is okay with it. That that's fine.
Sue:Like, I get Yeah.
Chris:I get
Sue:that you can get to that place, but I still feel like why
Chris:Probably, like, view it like an actor or whatever, I guess. Like, you know, tapping Yes. Kisses on screen wife
Sue:or Yeah. Right.
Chris:Husband or whatever.
Sue:But but I just I feel like it's so far from what he's all about and what the songs are even all about and all that kind of stuff. It's it just doesn't go it doesn't go with their, you know don't
Chris:all the any YouTube fans who happen to listen to this are, like, shouting probably saying, like, but it's part of what they do to connect with the audience. And it's just part of, you know, much I appreciate that they changed, you know, in recent tours to more, like, bringing fans collectively up on stage or playing guitar or whatever, you know, like doing something a little different than that. Just needing to but yeah.
Sue:But I feel like
Chris:That goes back to
Sue:different ways you could connect with your audience.
Chris:Right.
Sue:Rather than making it a like, it's making it a sexual thing to me, which is I'm I'm fine with sexual things if they make sense. But
Chris:That one didn't. Doesn't Like that was the Zoo Tube tour especially. Yeah. Sweaty Bono and some half drunk girl brought up on stage.
Sue:And that
Chris:was like you're in that was when I was introduced to you too and you kinda like were introduced to me as being a hardcore Yeah. Alright. Yeah. And then I'm because I'm going to two shows like the Tuesday and Wednesday show and you're just coming to the Tuesday show, which was we intentionally sort of chose to do that or whatever. But, it kind of I feel more relaxed going to the show with you knowing that I'm not worried about if I need if I like somehow like experiencing this show And you you could be coming on the Wednesday night too and it would I would feel the same way.
Chris:Like, just knowing that I have two shows to like sort of if I miss a song moment or something that I wanted to catch the first time. Because I remember that in the three sixty tour when we went in Edmonton, I think it was. And, kind of just feeling like at the end you're like the big letdown of like, okay, that's it. This is over now. I we didn't I don't know specifically what it was that I missed or whatever.
Chris:But like as a YouTube fan, you're just kind of like wanting to experience it all and you're wanting some moment to happen and not that it has to be like me dancing on stage with to be a moment. But why do you laugh so much? Do you think that would be?
Sue:Have you seen yourself dance? Not even it's not even like big 40 year old guy. It's you specifically that won't even dance with me. Right. And yeah.
Sue:Anyways. You can edit that out if it's embarrassing to you.
Chris:Anyways, that having that second concert to go to that allows sort of like for other stuff to happen and even just from a band perspective will be interesting whether they do a different set list and stuff. That's all sort of YouTube fan territory obviously. But, yeah, there's a bunch of interesting debates happening with the concerts within YouTube fans that I'll I'll be I won't tell you about before, because I don't wanna prejudice what your opinions are of the concert, but just to debrief on the next episode of of Daily ish, we'll do sort of after all that has happened to sort of see where your thoughts and how it was and what you experienced or innocence. Alright. Thanks for joining me again, Sue.
Chris:And, you can find this episode at good stuff that I'm slash dailyish/253 and, I will see you again. Talk to you again after we've experienced some you too. Thanks for listening. Hope you have a great day. Bye.
