Quitting

Knowing when to fold something, walk away, and run.
Speaker 1:

Hello. Welcome to Daily's for Wednesday, April 25. It's currently 16 degrees, and we've still got a feels like 14, which means the wind is cold and, it is. I can attest to that. I was out actually outside for a brief moment going to get a iced coffee.

Speaker 1:

As you do from the local coffee shop, which happens to be the localist coffee shop happens to be McDonald's. So it's with some shame that I say that I went to a McDonald's for coffee, but actually the coffee's not bad. So this is not a way of the podcast nor a coffee podcast. On this episode, I wanted to follow-up on something that I had talked about in passing sort of in previous episodes. And I think I'm I'm actually fairly bad at doing that where I mentioned stuff on the show and then never talked about it again.

Speaker 1:

It's kinda like the equivalent of like, a sitcom or a kid's cartoon show where some character arc starts, but then they lose interest in that character or doesn't seem to work that well, and then they just never talk about it again. And, I always when I'm listening to shows, I think, oh, I can't wait to hear about whatever they talked about when they mentioned. We'll talk about that in a future episode. But and so I know the if there is anybody out there like me who does remember those things and thinks that of me, I apologize and we'll try to do better in the future at that. Maybe I'll talk about that in a future episode.

Speaker 1:

But at in a previous episode, I've mentioned how the course system that I use to for publishing and and displaying and selling and all that stuff, all the things that go along with publishing courses on the web called Podia, that app. And I was thinking about whether to continue paying for it and using it and selling courses or to shut it down and just do something else with that content and future content like that. And so over the weekend, last week actually, I I made the decision to to shut it down. It's, I think it's about $30. It's $20 some $20.20 some dollars US, so 30 some dollars Canadian each month that I'm paying to host the course courses that I have.

Speaker 1:

I have an Instagram course and Snapchat course right now on there, then was gonna work on I'm sort of working on the WordPress and podcasting courses. But the I've just realized that the pressure of that monthly fee wasn't enough to motivate me to actually put out the course, first of all. But then also whenever I did put out a course, there's this letdown of emotions because you've put all this work into this thing and five people buy it or whatever. I think it was maybe six that bought the Instagram one. And so it was like enough to pay for a month or two of hosting of the courses, and then I would be basically eating into my money my own money paying out of hand out of pocket for, the hosting.

Speaker 1:

And and I would have to just get back on that train of keeping on publishing and publishing and stuff. And realizing that I didn't have the either I don't know if the I I can't honestly say I don't have didn't have the time, but I certainly wasn't feeling the pressure and the motivation to publish more courses through that. I love the idea of it, but it's something that in reality I needed to admit wasn't something I was gonna be following through on after however many months it's been that I've been hosting and and wanting to do these courses and and wanting to publish them more of them and market myself as a someone who's doing that. So it was with a lot of relief actually, just like sort of stress and worry that I came to that conclusion, but then also just the, like, worry and and feeling like I'm letting a bunch of folks, there's about 30 people who or 36 people I think that was on the mailing list and or had bought a course previously. And so just letting them know that, hey, this isn't gonna be there anymore, and I'm shutting it down.

Speaker 1:

And if you want to, you know, try I basically sort of said, like, till the end of April, I'll I'll keep it running and then be shutting it down. But I'm also in the process of moving all the the content that was on there to my YouTube channel just so that it's that it's somewhere. It's archived. If somebody felt like they didn't get their money's worth yet out of in time. The last sale of a of a course on there was from back in February, so it's been two months since then.

Speaker 1:

And plus now they have a week just under a week of warning. And then, of course, like I said, it'll be on the YouTube channel for free, I guess. So, so hopefully, feel like they've got their money's worth at this point for what they paid, and, and then, yeah, it'll be available in perpetuity to watch as long as YouTube exists, I guess. And as I was walking back from my, little jaunt over to the local coffee shop, I I was feeling this, like, feeling of, like, letting the letting people down, the failing, the not living up to my own sort of goals of publishing courses and making money off of that, and that would be, like, the way that I would help fund my business and and that, yeah, it just that I failed basically, that I was in in extreme terms, like a loser at putting this out. And in the same token, also then, like, getting constantly bombarded either on Twitter or emails or whatever because I'm in that space a lot with, hey, here's my new course.

Speaker 1:

Here's my new thing. Here's the thing I'm just I've been working on. I'm like and seeing people who, again, whether they really are or not, they could be just like me where they're making they're selling only five of them and they're just kinda like trucking on trying to make a go of it. Or maybe my perception is that they're, you know, super successful at it, and this is what they do, and it's it comes super easy to them. That's how your brain or my brain anyways talks to myself when I'm in those moments.

Speaker 1:

I know from talking to friends who do it that it's it's hard work. It's tons of work. It's debilitating sometimes to put out a course and then have to keep promoting it over and over and over and over and over and hoping that somebody's gonna buy it. And that it's not like you can just put it out there, put it on the shelf, and people walk by and see it all the time. It's up to you to put it in front of them, whether it's on Twitter or your email newsletter or Facebook, wherever you happen to be.

Speaker 1:

And that it's a it's like a treadmill. You have to keep on pushing that product, pushing yourself basically. And so that's the part I knew that I wasn't really game for, because I have a lot of stuff that I'm already promoting, pushing on people I feel like, free stuff, podcasts, things like that. But there still was a sense of, like, failure with regards to the courses that I was hoping to do. And so I'm I mean, I'm struggling with that a bit and sort of letting that trying to let that go.

Speaker 1:

And, and also, like, just working through hopefully, there's there hasn't yet been. I mean, it's been a few hours since I sent the email and put a post up on my website, but hopefully, there isn't huge backlash from it or whatever that people are upset about. And I don't wanna undervalue what they feel like they paid into something for, but also, I don't want to I'm not can't live my life with, the, I guess, weight of of regret or disappointment over 10 to $20 purchase that they may have made as well when they did get content, obviously, that they were hoping to get. So that all said, send me emails if you're angry, and, happy to hear from you and happy to help you if you are somebody who is who bought a course and isn't unsure of how or you're unsure of how to get access to that beyond the end of April here. And also if you were somebody who was looking forward to something that I was gonna be doing, like whether the podcasting course or the WordPress course, I will be I'm having a lot of fun just publishing stuff to my YouTube channel, the Lemon Productions YouTube channel, which is linked in the show notes.

Speaker 1:

I always post a link to the last few videos in there. And and just not having to worry about overhead and and even because of YouTube's recent changes with stuff, there isn't even like I'm nowhere near being like, I forget what it's called, partner status or whatever it's called to get, paid for my videos by them. So it's just kinda like it's a hobby. It's for fun. Enjoy it if you want.

Speaker 1:

One video, like the last video I published has, I think, 12 views. And then the one the most recent one I just did yesterday, which happens to be a YouTube demo of the YouTube's app for their upcoming tour that has some augmented reality stuff in it. That's got 600 views. And like obviously because the YouTube fans are checking it out and stuff. And so it's just kind of fun experiment and relaxed.

Speaker 1:

And so maybe in a while, I'll get more serious with the YouTube thing or maybe I'll just continue being a little bit of a hobby. But it kind of just takes a bit of the weight off of me anyways with not having that monthly fee hanging over me and feeling like I have to answer for that, to my family and to my business. So hopefully that doesn't disappoint you all too much. And, like I said, tweet at me at hi, Chris. If you have questions about it, email me at [email protected], if you have questions or concerns or frustrations with that.

Speaker 1:

Alright. We got the, YouTube podcast that we're doing tonight. There's tour prep. Speaking of YouTube, there's tour prep stuff that were previews, I guess, that we're talking about tonight with it being about a week away from the first show in Tulsa, Oklahoma. And I'll be actually go heading out to Montreal in June for the shows there and looking forward to if any of you are YouTube fans who happen to be going to Montreal, maybe there'll be some sort of fan group meetup thing or just in the GA Floor somewhere that we'll have to say hi and chat.

Speaker 1:
