Focus Chris. Focus.

Sometimes I dive into too many projects and then have to spend time pulling back from things.
Speaker 1:

Hello. Welcome to Daily(ish) for Wednesday, April 11, 02/2020 I don't yeah. There's other ways of saying that it's, currently minus two, feels like minus eight. That felt like the most Canadian two I've ever said in my life. This is not a weather podcast though, but this podcast is brought to you by Patreon supporters at patreon.com/ichris who supports me with their monies, which is actually gonna go directly towards paying down potentially here.

Speaker 1:

We're just sorta working through the details, but paying for, our hosting fees for another year for good stuff, which, is awesome. It helps just remove that issue from being like a removes that as an issue for Kyle and I to have to stress about and figure out whether this hobby is worth spending this big chunk of money on. And, so having the Patreon support means we can still spend some time and make sure we're doing the right thing with it, but, don't have to stress and worry that we're wasting our own money on, this whole podcasting fun hobby venture thing that we're doing. So, I am I'm looking at remember I said yesterday on the previous episode I have a schedule I'm trying to keep, and, so far today, I'm on task. I've, had two hours or so of of web client work scheduled, and then right at 11:00 as it just flips over to eleven here.

Speaker 1:

As I record this, it's supposed to be for daily ish for half an hour, forty five minutes or so, and then lunch. So, so far so good on the schedule side of things, keeping focused on that. Although I will say I did take about a fifteen minute break here to tweet out that I'm looking for tickets for Montreal night two in YouTube's concert in early June. And within a few minutes, the YouTube fan community responded with the tickets that I can get. And thanks to Beth, the YouTube tattoo project, which you should check out.

Speaker 1:

It's basically her archiving, from various concerts throughout the years, people's tattoos related to YouTube and their stories thereof. So if you like the sort of people of New York style blog and books and stuff like that, this would be similar, but just obviously focused on YouTube tattoos and or people with YouTube tattoos and the stories behind them. So very cool. Link is in the show notes. Youtubetattooproject.com, I think is the link.

Speaker 1:

One thing since coming back from the trip is just feeling a bit of a need, and I had this sort of restlessness before I left, need to focus and a need in what I do. And I this is kind of like the push and pull of, working for myself probably, but also just I know my my personality is, like, dive into everything and then get drowning in too much stuff and then pull back and reset and then sort of dive in again. And it's kind of just a cycle. I'm not sure if it's a one or two year cycle or a six month cycle or what what the exact time frame is for it, but it feels like it's one of those times now where I need to pull back a bit. And, so in in particular with what I create and put out and work right work wise as well as just hobby stuff, I need to sort of pair things down a bit for a for a season anyways.

Speaker 1:

So nothing's changing with the podcast and good stuff. That's all good. That's gonna keep going. And there's there's stuff I'm doing more of hopefully here in the near future with good stuff, but in areas like, the courses and stuff that I've been creating, which I love doing and I love putting them together, but I just I've I know that I don't have the I guess, I don't if it's the marketing chops or the marketing time. I guess the the, depending on what kind of mood I'm in, I'll either blame myself or blame time.

Speaker 1:

But, to adequately promote and just dive in and be that person. And so I'm not sure how to balance, so I like I saw the Instagram course and other stuff that I'm I have ideas for the WordPress course and how to podcast course, on a service called Podia, formerly with Coach. And because of it, I was an early adopter of the platform, I got a really good deal on the monthly plan for them with them, but, and that's what's kept me there because if I give up that plan, I it changes from being like a off top of head, let's say it's a $25 a month thing to being like an $80 a month thing for the same plan. And it's a great platform, and I love it, and it works really well. And putting publishing a course and selling a course, and then now they've added membership stuff, which was is really cool as well.

Speaker 1:

All of that works awesome. And and if I was gonna run a membership site of some sort, I would probably wanna try and do it there, but it doesn't really work well with the podcasting side of things for what I'm doing with podcasting and what we're doing. And then I also have the Lem Productions, YouTube channel where I publish videos for free, of like lighter smaller videos, quick quicker production, not as, you know, detailed, not as, walking you through stuff as, the courses are, but still a way to sort of like it's a it's a I think I have a part of my brain anyways has like an education showing teaching showing others what I'm learning as I'm learning it kind of, bent in my brain. And so that's sort of an outlet for that on my YouTube channel. And I've I've really tossed and turned the idea around in my head of, like, with the Podia service, maybe I just give away that content, the courses that I've already done, and then put out put some effort into some new ones as just a way of documenting what I'm learning, having a whether it's not necessarily for I've really enjoyed not having a focus of trying to get more subscribers and trying to, like, game the YouTube system and market and all that kind of stuff, but just throwing it out there, seeing who likes what whatever videos that I put out and building a little bit of a community around there and helping sort of like in the audio video and how to use Mac's space on on YouTube.

Speaker 1:

And there's by no means, think it's like a 160, a 170 subscribers and probably only 20 of those are active and videos generally get, you know, a 100 to 200 views and then the odd one gets a few thousand views because it happens to be at the right time, right place. But it's not and with YouTube recently changing their, limits for being becoming a partner or, advertiser on getting money off of YouTube anyways for me, raising those limits way higher. It's not really even in the cards anytime soon to make any sort of money off of it, but just as a creative venture and having a bit of fun, it works really well. So right now, like the the going back to sort of the push and pull of time, effort, energy, focus, all that kind of stuff. There's that tick again.

Speaker 1:

I my gut reaction right now if I was just like if you if I had to do something right now is I would pull the videos and send stuff off of Podia and post them all onto the YouTube channel slowly and cancel the Podia membership, give up my sort of perks of being an early adopter there, and remove because it's a even if I'm not doing anything with right now, like I'm not actively putting together a course at this moment or marketing anything or whatever, it's still kinda hanging over me that I'm, a, I'm spending money on it, and b, I should be doing a course or doing something for it. But it feels like the, yeah, the rate at which that treadmill, I guess, of course production and stuff is not something that I can actively sustain, and and keep going in a meaningful enough way to be able to even just pay the bills of the $25 a month because it's you're I mean, if I had a a 50 to $100 course, obviously, sale of a of a course would cover the cost, but there's also all the time and efforts create in creating a course that goes into it.

Speaker 1:

And so I'm just not sure that it's it's cut out or I'm cut out or I don't know, one of one of somewhere in my brain or somewhere in this my work production, time workflow, not cut out to be putting together courses, at least at this time. And I would much rather focus on if I'm gonna market a way to support me and and the things I'm doing, I think I'd much rather have the good stuff service podcasts as the thing, and that's where if you're gonna give me some money, you would do that for through there. The YouTube videos would be just, again, a creative outlet for fun and potentially, you know, like people could share them and all that kind of stuff as a way of helping me out, getting the word out about it, I guess. But, kind of just folk and then the money that I actually make to by editing podcasts for clients, doing web work for clients is how I support my family, because obviously that's fairly important. And that way, I'm it kinda removes right now, I have sort of three podcast editing and WordPress and websites for clients as well as course production is kinda like three tent poles.

Speaker 1:

Tents usually have more than three poles, maybe a stool. So I'm looking to go from a three peg stool to a two peg stool, which seems kinda silly because that's gonna be a very tippy. Obviously, one of those falls, then my life crumbles and I break my back. So that's sort of where I'm leaning right now, and, we'll see if that ends up if I end up falling on my face or if it works out and, has a bit more of a focused life because of it. Your thoughts are welcome, but I don't I'm not looking to you, the listener, for, whether I should or shouldn't because I know whenever I've done that in the past, then I'll get one or two or a few responses.

Speaker 1:

And, obviously, it's something that I have to live with and not you. And so while I appreciate your responses, can tweet at me, iChris, email [email protected], or hit me up in the Discord, the Good Stuff Discord. If you're a Patreon supporter, get access to our Discord server, which is formerly a Slack server. It's just like kinda like a forum where we chat and make fun of each other and post dumb jokes and argue about ketchup. So even though I asked them not to, it still seems to be starting up.

Speaker 1:

Patreon.com/ichris is where you can do that. Watch some of the videos, share them, and, find me somebody to edit a podcast for. That'd be awesome. You don't have to do that though. That's my job.

Speaker 1:

Okay. Hope you have a great day wherever you are. Thank you for listening. Talk to you next time on, today's Wednesday. And looking at my schedule, Friday.

Speaker 1:

Friday afternoon is another episode of Daily ish coming out there. Scheduled, promised, signed, and I just have to deliver. Have a great day. Bye.
