Hello. Welcome to Daily ish for Monday, February 22. It's minus five degrees. Feels like minus 10 degrees outside with the old windshield, but this is not a weather podcast. This is episode a 162 of Daily ish, and it's brought to you by Feed Press.

Speaker 1:I'm actually recording this. I don't if my voice sounds all that different to you or not. If you're an audio nerd, maybe it does. If you if you're not and you don't care, you're just like, shut up, Chris, already about the mics and the gear and stuff. Let's get to the boring details of your life.
Speaker 1:But, I'm recording this on a Shure MV 51, which is a condenser microphone. It plugs it's a little portable unit, plugs into, can be plugged into your iOS device of choice, iPhone, iPod, iPad using the Apple MFI program made for iPhone, iPod, iPad, as I said. And, you don't need any additional adapters or chargers or wall mount adapter thingies to power it. It has some sweet sort of DSP presets for speech or singing or just flat recordings or acoustic instruments or allowed, say, concert venue, that kind of thing. And it it looks really cool.
Speaker 1:It's solid. It's built really solidly and, looks really cool. And so, Shure Canada actually just reached out to me before I left on our trip about the idea of, testing out some of the mics because I was tweeting that I was didn't have any portable mics to bring along and ended up with a mic that I probably shouldn't have gotten in hindsight as you well know because it didn't work out that well for me. And this actually is the mic I think I should have gotten. It's, like I said, it would stand up to being hauled around very easily.
Speaker 1:It can also plug into, with has the the common mounts for mic stands and and things like that, so you can use it that way if you wanted to, but also gives you portability to just take it out to a coffee shop or whatever you wanna do. It could plug into your laptop or, like I said, I haven't I'm recording it right now into my iPhone. And, the only little issue I've had, and this has burned me twice now, and it's just it's more user error than anything really, but is there's a little mute mic mute button on the device. And a couple times, I've started recording, not checked the iPhone in this case to make sure it's recording, and, didn't realize that somehow I'd hit the mute button. And my other the issue is also that I'm not wearing headphones right now.
Speaker 1:I'm monitoring my own voice, which is normally what I do when I record a podcast. So there's a couple things, you know, my brain and, not recording properly, I guess, working against me in defense of the unit, I guess, but, it is something that I've done a couple times by accident. So that's the one little issue, but I've been really happy with how my voice sounds with it. It's and and the portability, like I said, it it it's great to be able to take this almost anywhere, and it's small enough that you don't feel like you're, like, setting up this big mic thing, but, looks good enough that you feel like you're actually doing something kinda cool with audio, if that makes any sense. I'll put links to Amazon in Canada and and B and H in The States.
Speaker 1:It's about $2.49 Canadian. Probably, I don't know, $50 US or something. No. I'm sure it's a little more than that. But, so it is it isn't cheap.
Speaker 1:They have a they did send me a cheaper another model, like, a less expensive model is probably what you should say. The MV five, that also sounds pretty good. It's doesn't look quite as it has its own unique look, I guess, but doesn't sound quite as, you know, deep, I guess, and and but it's definitely a good mic to have an, as an option for portability. But I haven't done a lot of testing with it, so I can't say for sure that it's amazing or not amazing. But, yeah, I've just been so enamored with the MV 51.
Speaker 1:It kinda looks like if you look at it in the pictures, on the links, it looks kinda like your old timey radio, mic, and so that's part of the, I think, the the appeal of it anyway. So I'm still nervous recording into an iPhone as opposed to, like, computer hard drive or, you know, and Logic Pro and stuff that I know is well, theoretically, know is recording and everything, whereas I don't trust my phone still as a device for that kind of stuff. Like, it just went to sleep here. And I know that it generally should be okay, but it's somehow something about that unnerves me. So, but with practice, I know I can get used to it.
Speaker 1:So, anyway, let me know your thoughts if you have any. I didn't record. I I missed a day or two last week, and I apologize on my efforts to be daily in February here, but I hope you'll forgive me. You can leave comments, on the discuss this episode link in the subreddit, the good stuff subreddit, or emailing me, [email protected] on Twitter. I'm iChris on Twitter, of course, and, happy to answer any questions if you have any about some of this gear stuff.
Speaker 1:But I know a lot of you aren't podcast nerds like myself, and so you just want the episodes. So, anyway, I hope you have a great day. I will hopefully be back again tomorrow with another episode, and, thanks for listening. Have a great day. Bye.
